Choose by responsibility, not job title

A residential drafter documents an agreed design and construction scope. An architect provides architectural services where design responsibility or licensure is required. An engineer evaluates and designs structural or other technical systems within the engineer’s discipline. One project may need more than one of these roles.

A practical decision framework

1. Ask the building department whether stamped architectural or engineering documents are required.
2. Identify structural changes, unusual site conditions, and work outside a drafting scope.
3. Confirm who owns design decisions and consultant coordination.
4. Get each provider’s deliverables and exclusions in writing.
